Seminar “IFA Expo 22”

Last semester, finally, the IfA Jahresausstellung took place again in its full extend! This time it was completely self-organized by students.
Together with the IfA Fachschaft and our students of the seminar „IFA Expo 22“ we hosted this year’s Jahresausstellung under the headline of UNMUTE. We took this as an opportunity to redesign the process of hosting the annual exhibition freely out of a student‘s perspective and to rethink our relation to the Institute of Architecture.
Reflecting the past semesters of studying online, we developed a concept, organized the exhibition, Rundgang and discussion of the Jahresausstellung and finished this process with a big celebration party. Addressing both, digital and physical spaces, it was our aim to connect students, departments and the public, to get in touch with each other, to exchange freely our ideas and share our experiences directly.
UNMUTE IS A TIME AFTER.
We reflect on two years of sitting behind screens, crits with disrupted internet connection inside rooms with less space in-between beds, laundry and always the same faces. But also learning how to connect digitally, exploring new spaces and improving our skills.
UNMUTE IS TO SENSE EACH OTHER.
Back in the studios we are happy to finally speak mouth to mouth, eye to eye, drinking coffee, having lunch, chatting in between - ideas and concepts arising all of a sudden.
UNMUTE IS TAKING A STAND.
We have to talk seriously and we are obliged to do so - problems have to be addressed, new and old ones, together and open-minded and directly without hesitation.
UNMUTE IS TO REACH OUT.
To raise our voice, to turn it up. To get uncomfortable and involved in trouble. We have to listen to other perspectives and be open to change our own. We have to talk more and beyond our bubble, to celebrate the contact and feel the touch.
UNMUTE IS TO BECOME LOUD AGAIN.

The concept of UNMUTE implies to open up, to break out and targets the whole spectrum of our senses. We applied the concept to the different formats of the program. In that way we involved our bodies - our mouths, eyes, ears, hands and noses. Along with that FG Bildene Kunst developed the matching cups - exposed body parts are reaching out, complementing each other if you put them together. The cups were sold during the Expo and can still be purchased at the Kiosk.
The opening and the RUNDGANG were live-streamed and can still be seen on the youtube channel of the faculty.
During the EXPO, the departments presented their individual exhibitions in the respective studios and public areas of the building. The student works varied from drawings and models, over computer-generated animations and multimedia presentations. In addition, we developed two installations on our own - our home-office spaces, that were also used as streaming and discussion platform during the exhibition and Rundgang.
